February 2007 brings us an alternate take of ‘Seth Thomas,’ from the third set by the Dave Douglas Quintet on December 9, 2006. The title of this piece refers to the clock-maker Seth Thomas. Says Dave: “When I was growing up this beautiful old metronome was always on the piano–it is embossed with the name Seth Thomas in florid Gothic print. I recently reconnected with this metronome when I was cleaning out my attic. I had forgotten all about it and was really excited because it brought back a lot of memories. However, in storage it lost some of its equilibrium and it now has a very unique, if uneven, perspective on time. I wrote this piece inspired by the new beat.”
