about

A note about this track from Dave Douglas:

"I originally composed November for the album ‘Freak In’ which came out on RCA Bluebird in 2003. It was conceived as part of a suite of pieces inspired by paintings of the Flemish Primitives (another piece from that suite is Mystic Lamb, found as a secret track at the end of that recording). The original title of the piece was The Return Of The Herd, after the painting by Pieter Breugel. Taken out of context, the title felt more plodding and bovine than the music deserved. The Return Of The Herd is a seasonal work, dedicated to the autumn and specifically the month of November. For those of you who still manage cattle, you well know that in November the herd returns from pasture to the barns for the winter. This evokes that special autumnal feeling of nostalgia for the summer, preparations for the winter. That’s what the composition goes for. Hence the title.

Playing these pieces again after so much time is like rediscovering long ago feelings and emotions, reopening the thoughts and concentrations that went into creating them in the first place. And re-imagining them, finding the parts of them that resonate today. Chet, Ryan, Frank, Linda, and Rudy all put a really special vibe on this one."
