Here’s a wilder version of Mabel Normand from last Spring — the recent live tempo is a considerable ramp up, and this version features a harmonically caffeinated Adam Benjamin on modified rhodes and extraordinary drumming from Gene Lake. DJ Olive on turntables, Brad Jones on Ampeg Baby Bass, Marcus Strickland on tenor and Dave Douglas on muted trumpet. Mabel Normand was American cinema’s heartthrob of the ‘teens and co-star in Fatty and Mabel Adrift.

This is a album I've gone back to several times. Matt lets his group play, and play they do. All of these pieces fell like full-group efforts, not written by a bassist to feature bass. Some songs feel driven, some searching, some making statements. Outstanding.

I love the fresh sounds of this ensemble. Catchy but quirky, challenging but accessible. I heard reminiscences of Frisell and Zorn, a touch of Bley... and "Everywhere from There to There" sounded almost immediately like a lost Joe Jackson track, cleverly remixed. Kudos on a thoroughly engaging and entertaining listen! Would love to hear more from this collective!
