about

Two-time Grammy-nominated trumpeter Dave Douglas and Juno-nominated saxophonist Chet Doxas lead a new collaborative project honoring the musical legacy of composer, bandleader, saxophonist and clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre.

Giuffre blazed many trails in music, inspiring new levels of melodic invention, rhythmic subtlety and improvisational freedom. Featuring Giuffre's own "The Train and the River," the standard "Travelin' Light" and originals from both Douglas and Doxas, Riverside puts a contemporary stamp on a small group improvisation while evoking the dynamic ensembles Giuffre led.

Riverside was created in memory of the composer, bandleader, saxophonist, and clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre (1921-2008). Jimmy blazed many trails in music. He inspires us to new levels of melodic invention, rhythmic subtlety, and true freedom in the practice of improvisation. We play a couple of his pieces here, and we dedicate our original compositions to his spirit.

Chet and Dave would like to thank Steve Swallow, Jim Doxas, and Steve Bellamy for their vision, musicianship and passion for this project. Thanks also to all the musicians who have played this music in various forms. Chet would also like to thank his family for their unconditional love and support and his five other brothers in the SRB. Dave would also like to thank Jim Tuerk, Seamus and Jeff Cowan, the Doxas Family, and The Banff Centre.

Special thanks to all the listeners along the riverside of our travels in music.
