about

Three exclusive tracks from the live shows in December 2011.

You Are Not Alone. A new arrangement for the brass mob — of a beautiful tune from the recent Mavis Staples record, composed by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy. The band played this a lot last summer, and this is the only recording available of the Brass Ecstasy version.

Safeway. Dave moved into a residency at the Aaron Copland house on January 7, 2011. On January 8, Rep. Gabby Giffords was shot in Tuscon, Arizona at a public meeting in front of a grocery store. This piece came about in response, and it was also the first thing Dave began to write in his residency. Safeway is an acknowledgement of Copland’s public citizenship. There is also a pronounced use of open fifths that are a tip of the hat to the master’s presence and his generosity.

Great Awakening. You may know this tune from Spirit Moves, the first recording of Brass Ecstasy. It’s about being in church, and getting kicked in the ass by Lester Bowie. Luis Bonilla plays a typically vibrant and powerful solo. As Maude always says, “That was fun.”
